Since I was a child, I’ve been connected to art, mostly sculpting and painting. But, when I was 17, I began to lose my hearing and insecurities about myself started to creep in. With that, the dream of becoming a professional artist was put on the back drawer.
Now, as a person with severe hearing loss, I understand I’ve been hiding behind my disability for many years, afraid of being the center of attention. I truly believed I would make a fool of myself if I walked into the spotlight. It was at the age of 40, being faced with a severe case of fibroids, that I chose to re-evaluate my life and ultimately decided to overcome my fears of becoming a professional artist. I then re-connected with my drawings, paintings and sculptures in a much deeper way.
Through my art, I want people to understand the view of a person with an invisible disability. I know now that having a disability such as hearing loss doesn’t define you, but instead, it gives you an unique way of experiencing the world. And that can be both beautiful and powerful if you accept yourself for who you are. I want to share that vision with others and show and that its possible to overcome your fears and allow yourself to become the best version you can possibly be.
