The Story of Evan – by his mom, Angela
I had twin boys on March 11, 2007. We had tried for 6 years to have children and I had waiters on this day for what seemed like a lifetime. The boys were born 2 month premature weighing 3lb 8 oz and 3 lb 11 oz. Evan was born with Bilateral Microtia and Atresia and Aiden was born with a mild case of Cerebral Palsy and eventually diagnosed with epilepsy.
I would not change a single moment in our lives. The challenges and joys have brought blessings. They have also given us a great respect and admiration for those that have entered our lives.
Evan has a moderate hearing loss and received his first hearing aids at 6 months old. We used basic sign language as Evan was able to communicate mostly using verbal communication once he was able to talk.
My most memorable moment is when we were able to get Evan’s Ponto hearing aids which were more powerful than the hearing aids he had previously. He received these aids at age 8. I still remember it, we were standing in the bathroom and tapped his feet and said ‘Momma, I can hear my shoes!’ At that moment, I realize that my son, my pride and joy, the one I had prayed for, had never heard such a simple noise that we take for granted.
We started tapping our shoes and dancing in our little bathroom, giggling (while trying to hide the tears streaming down my face). If you had to ask -this is one of my best Momma moments. Even now, as a 13 year old he still likes to dance with his Momma in the kitchen.
A word from the Artist:
The story of Evan discovering that his shoes make tapping sounds was an absolute delight to portray! This time I decided to go for a more illustrative approach, imagining what it would be like for Evan to enjoy that unique sound while dancing happily in the kitchen, as if he’s a professional tap dancer filling his environment with his positive energy.
