The Story of Andrea
Andrea’s story starts when she and her twin sister were born prematurely. She was at a higher risk because unlike her sister, she wasn’t born with a lot of blood.
As life has it, Andrea wasn’t tested for hearing loss when she was born, but her sister was. It wasn’t until she was 3 years old that her parents noticed Andrea was having speech and listening issues. That’s when she started wearing bilateral hearing aids.
From kindergarten to high school, Andrea has been placed in Special Ed classes so she could get help with her work because hearing what she was being taught and understanding instructions was really difficult for her.
It wasn’t until her senior year of high school that her family discovered she also has dyslexia, which was another reason why school has been such a challenge.
During her freshmen year, Andrea met her HH provider. Andrea and her mom quickly bonded with her. They became very close friends as the HH provider helped Andrea with a lot of her reading and English assignments.
Andrea says: “I can’t thank her enough for all she has done for me. If it wasn’t for my mom who found her, I wouldn’t be where I am. With her help I was an A student for my 4 years of high school despite facing many challenges along the way. I’ve faced lost, burn outs, and depression and I can’t thank my mom enough for helping me. She is a powerful women who stood by my side and helped me get what I needed to succeed. She has helped me through the highs and lows of my life along with my sister and HH provider.”
Now Andrea is about to start a new chapter of her life as she’ll be heading off to Saint Mary’s College. Even though she feels scared, she knows it will help her get to where she wants to be in life.
Andrea is on a road to follow her passion which is making art. She dreams of becoming an animator or a comic book illustrator. Art has been the way to express herself when she can’t describe things into words. She also uses it to create her own worlds and characters, feeling like her imagination is on overdrive 24/7. For her, art is relaxing and inspiring and it holds a lot more power when there are stories to go with it.
I found out that Andrea loves to draw this furry characters and wears a lot of rainbow colors, so I wanted the art to really reflect her interests and dreams for her future.
