I got to know quite a bit about Harper’s talents and personality when I was hired by her mom, Valli tyo illustrate their children’s book: “Now Hear This”. She’s got plenty of both! I decided for this painting to represent her in warm tones of pinks and yellows with a blue-green background, matching the color of her eyes and her book cover. I wanted her portrait to show her confident personality, but also her caring and loving side.
The Story of Harper – by her mom, Valli
Harper is a tenacious and determined teen. This gusto began the moment she entered the world.
When Harper was born, we were no stranger to hearing loss. Her older brother, Battle, was also born hard of hearing, which helped create a roadmap for our family’s journey.
Instead of viewing hearing loss as a roadblock, Harper decided to use her voice to help others and make a difference.
Harper’s dream came to fruition. She is now the published author of the Amazon #1 New Release children’s book: “Now Hear This: Harper Soars with her Magic Ears!” Harper has proved there’s nothing kids with hearing loss can’t do.
When a child is diagnosed with hearing loss, it is overwhelming. The future can feel uncertain and parents might worry whether or not their child will thrive. Harper’s story allows readers to follow her journey, providing both parents and children who are facing any kind of diagnosis a much-needed dose of encouragement. Through Harper’s hearing loss story, kids can imagine what is possible.
Understanding and awareness are key to feeling included, and the community around a child with hearing loss is critical. This story shares ways people in a deaf child’s life can better support them. Harper’s witty approach to storytelling resonates with young readers and will surely inspire the people who love and support them.
When not writing, Harper is also a fearless competitor, playing on an all-boys club basketball team, never backing down to challenges or tough competition. What’s more, this year she was the first girl to ever play on her middle school flag football team.
On and off the court and field she has never viewed her hearing loss as something that limits her. On the contrary, she views life as an adventure, searching for mountains to climb and seas to sail.
At age thirteen, she already has confidence and a go-get-em attitude.
The bar has always been set high for Harper and Battle. They have proven that they will not only reach for the bar but they will surpass it!
Teachers describe Harper as having in insatiable curiosity and coaches marvel at her grit and effort.
A role model; she doesn’t see hearing loss as something that will stand in her way, it doesn’t define her.
She’s going to continue to keep reaching for the stars!
