Growing up in a hearing household, Isabella was never taught to love her Deafness. It was one of the many things that set her apart from her family. No one ever labeled her as “Deaf” or even “Hard of Hearing.” To everyone else, she was just a hearing person who was broken.

In high school, Isabella went through a legal battle that changed her life. She had endured two years of discrimination and abuse at school based on her disability. All of this happened behind closed doors until a call for help brought everything to light.

After the dust settled, Isabella stumbled upon her first advocacy project. One of the lawyers who helped with her case invited her to join the National Association of the Deaf (@nad1880) to help create new laws benefiting Deaf/HoH people in Texas. That was the first day Isabella truly felt part of a community.

Since then, she has dedicated her time and effort to speaking out against discrimination, ableism/audism, and language deprivation. She joined others like her with the same goal.

Isabella is proud to be Deaf for many reasons:

She is proud to be part of a community that stood up for her at her lowest point.
She is proud to have Deaf friends who encourage her to succeed.
She is proud to follow in the footsteps of Deaf elders who taught her about the Deaf world.
She is proud to encourage Deaf youth to be themselves and know their worth.
She is proud of their language(s) and culture.
She is especially proud to live freely as a Deaf queer woman of color and fight for her communities.
Deaf or hearing, Isabella believes it’s never too late to embrace your culture and take pride in your history and achievements. You are worth more than you know.
