The Story of Kenny – by her mom Kendra

We just recently found out in February that our youngest of three daughters, who was 20 months old at the time, is completely deaf. We had absolutely no idea as she has adapted so well!

Since we have found out we have thrown ourselves Into learning sign language and have had countless doctors appts getting her ready for cochlear implants.

Even though this journey is completely overwhelming and I have felt all the emotions, my husband and I have found the greatest blessings in the little moments. The ones where she turns my cheek to have me meet her eyes when she’s trying to show me something. The way her eyes light up when she signs to me and I understand. Her little body leaning on her toy guitar to feel the vibrations and “hear” the music. Priscila Soares’s pieces really resonated with me because I could see bits and pieces of our story in them. I am so proud of this little sweet pea; she is full of joy and character and she is already such a Victress- I cannot wait to see her world open up even more as she changes ours.

A word from me:

When Kendra approached me to ask for this commission, she told me that Kenny has been putting dandelions on her ears and smiling up a storm about it. She’s also on her way to get a pair of white cochlear implants. This observation made me think of this quote:

”All of the flowers of all the tomorrows are the seeds of today”

which made me want to portray her looking determined, looking ahead, dreaming, smiling. I wanted her to be like a little warrior, happy with who she is and who she will become.
