The Story of Asha – by her mom, Becky
Every family has their story of that moment when a child first notices that they are “different” and asks, “why do I have a hearing aid?” But Asha sees the world from a different perspective and wants to know: why does Mama NOT have a hearing aid?
Dada and Asha wear BAHA hearing aids, so conversations about hearing loss and hearing aids are a normal part of our lives.
At 4 years old, Asha began asking questions about Mama’s headband and why it did NOT have a hearing aid attached to it. She has become very concerned about Mama’s lack of a hearing aid and is doing her very best to convince Mama that hearing aids are amazing, and if Mama would just try one, she would be able to hear everything in the whole world. “Dada has a hearing aid. I have a hearing aid. Mama why don’t you have a hearing aid?”
Did you connect with Asha’s Story?
What does it meant to be different? Asha’s sweet story shows us that it’s all a matter of perspective. Unlike most families where having a child with hearing loss is unique, in their case, not wearing a hearing device is what makes one stand out! Asha’s mom, Becky is a wonderful advocate for people with hearing loss and the ones who are diagnosed with Treacher Collins such as her husband and youngest daughter. She makes and sells these beautiful softbands for bone anchored hearing devices (BAHAs) and she also blogs at thebahamama.com
She is now in the process of making a children’s book about their story.
In this painting I really wanted to capture the conversation between mother and daughter. I wanted Asha to have her hand softly touching her mom’s face and their eye gaze connected. It was also important for me to have Asha’s softband to be styled since this is something Becky is really good at doing.
